What is a SMART Board?

A SMART Board is, basically, a digital whiteboard! SMART Boards were first introduced by SMART Technologies back in 1991 and are known as the world's first interactive white board. To use it, you simply download compatible applications- you can download games, lessons or use programs such as PowerPoint, word or excel. It can be used in a variety of ways in the classroom, it can be used in conferences, or to communicate with faculty or staff.

How do SMART Boards work?

The SMART Boards are connected directly to the computer. A Smart Board can work with just the SMART Board and a computer but it is highly recommended that use it with a projector as well.

To write on the SMART Board, you can use the colored pens from the tray or you can remove a pen from the desired color tray and use your own finger to write directly on the board. After you have the SMART Board softwear downloaded and it is all set up, you can download lessons and activites directly off the internet!

SMART Pens/Pen Tray

How do SMART pens work?

Optical sensors in the pen tray automatically detect when a tool is lifted and send this information to the computer. In other words, the pen tools have neither electronic components nor ink: the technology is in the pen tray. If you pick up the red pen, your next contact with the surface will be in red ink. If you pick up the eraser, your next contact will erase the ink. The next contact could be with the actual pen, your finger, or any other object.
LED lights indicate which tool is active.
There are slots for black, blue, red and green pen tools, although the control panel can be used to change the color of the digital ink, or to change the pen tools to colored highlighters.
If more than one tool is removed from the tray, the last tool selected will be active.
