What is Podcasting?

A podcast is a series of audio or video digital-media files which is distributed over the Internet by syndicated download, through web feeds, to portable media players and personal computers.  Here is a quick example: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y-MSL42NV3c

Why Podcast?

Podcasting brings the power of the human voice to the web.

Many people use Podcasting on an everyday basis:

w    Radio Shows

w    Teachers

w    Preachers

w    Museums and Historical Sites

How to Podcast?

There are many different ways on how to podcast. You can edit an elaborate video, do a video recording that’s only one shot with no editing, or have a voice stream. What you need is some of the following media materials:

ú       Microphone

ú       Camera

ú       Headset

ú       Media Software

By using these materials and software you can create many different podcasts. They can be downloadable as well. Here are some examples of podcasting.

It is better as a teacher to make your podcasts available with no charge so your students can download a free copy for their own use later on. One way to make this possible is using a file sharing program and just sending out the link every time.

As a teacher, you could just send out the link to your page and just notify your students when a new file is available.

Things to Consider When Podcasting

  • Clear voice
  • Don’t mumble
  • Organization (beginning, middle, end)
  • Length

·        Appropriate for purpose (lecture vs. announcement)

Podcasting in Education

   Communication with Parents

o       Both teachers and parents have busy schedules, yet podcasting still allows for a personal meeting when the time is available

   Absent Students

o       Can download missed lectures or get extra help from the teacher about assignments

   Lessons

o       Lessons such as foreign languages or vocabulary would be helpful to students if they are podcasted. Students can go back and review and hear the pronunciation of words

   Oral Presentations

o       Minimizes the fear of standing in front of a class and presenting, yet their voice is still heard and the assignment is fulfilled

   Guest Speakers

o       Guest speakers in a moments notice

   Special Needs Students

o       Podcasting allows the teacher to easily provide accommodations if their lessons are podcasted

   Online Classes

o       Allows for a lecture via online, which is sometimes very useful to the class
