What is a BLOG?

In simple terms a "blog" is short for web log. A blog is an on-line journal or diary which can be either public or private, educational or entertaining, topic/content specific or eclectic.

Many blogs provide information, commentary or a reflection on a particular topic or they may represent personal diaries. Input is in reverse chronological order in blogs, meaning that the most recent entries will be found at the top of the page.

A blog also typically provides a forum for readers to post responses or reaction to the content in the blog. It is a great way to get your ideas and thoughts on the web.

Here is a video clip that briefly explains what a blog is...video.search.yahoo.com/video/play

What will you need to know about BLOGS?

 Hosted vs Self-Hosted Blogs:

  •       Hosted Blogs are more "user friendly." They tend to be easy to get started require a minimum amount of setup            and are free of charge.

               (popular hosts: www.blogger.com and www.wordpress.com)

  •       Self-Hosted, or Stand-Alone blogs, offer you more control.

               (popular hosts: www.movabletype.org and www.wordpress.com

In order to choose which platform to use you would have to decide which one is most likely to suit your needs the best.

Benefits of blogging in the classroom?

  •      Kids love blogging
  •      Technology can be a great motivator for students who lack motivation in reading and writing
  •      The publication of a students words and thoughts give student feeling of pride and accomplishment
  •      Blogging gives a student a "voice" as well as offer them a platform for reflective writing
  •      Blogs give other students the opportunity to post comments, give feedback and constructive critism
  •      It's FUN!

Linking education and BLOGGING

Blogging gives teachers the ability to communicate with other teachers all around the world. Professional education bloggers are able to use blogging as a way to keep teachers up to date with new and emerging ways to incorporate technology into their classrooms. They are able to post assignments, promote classroom discussion, share thoughts and ideas and so much more.

Here are some examples of Teacher to Teacher blog sites:

Students can even use blogs in the classroom. This blogs are called learner blogs. They are able to create a journal that only they and their teacher are able to see. The students might feel more comfortable asking the teacher a question on a blog rather then in the classroom setting. Teachers are also able to post homework assignments, discussion boards, and announcements where the entire class is able to see it.  This is another way that parents are able to check on their children and monitor their school work.
